Sewing Expert: Dawn Wood
Dawn has been making clothing for as long as she was old enough to hold a needle, having the best dressed Barbie around. She trained as a fashion designer and taught crafts in youth clubs prior to moving to London to work in theatre and film, at companies such as Berman and Nathans, and The Royal Opera House. Eventually becoming a freelance costume maker, she made items for a wide variety of clients, from a 16thc bodyguard for the King of Norway, to a bird showgirl outfit for Bjork and a coat for Miranda Richardson, with many weddings, museums and films along the way.
Moving back to her native Yorkshire in 2002 , Dawn continued to make bespoke items for her private clients and also set up her own design label
Ages Of Elegance, producing both men’s and women’s wear for both day and evening, including lingerie and home wares, drawing on her love of historical clothing . She was the UK Urban Fashion Awards Featured Lingerie Designer in 2007 and was recently shortlisted in the Leeds Retail Awards, in the local designer and lingerie categories, being the only independent in the latter.
She also runs the not for profit organisation ‘Fabrication’ from her studio in the centre of Leeds. Holding all manner of craft classes and clubs, from basic sewing, knitting and crochet, to vintage hair and makeup, jewellery and cushion making to make do and mend, leather work and enamelling, among others and advising local burlesque girls on their costumes.
Her varied workload, whether it is a pantomime tree, 1950’s girdle or an 18th century court dress replica, means her sewing and interpretation skills are second to none
