Celebrity Stylist Claire Todd says:

I love it when big names in showbiz have the courage to cherry pick their outfits based on what they really want to wear rather than always opting for the reassurance of a big name designer. It works both ways as the artist gets to wear unusual, more personal choices whilst simultaneously boosting the profile of lesser known names in fashion. Some may need the  reassurance of a big name designer label on their clothing, but hey, all the big names started as unknowns and it’s nice to see Cheryl supporting the new wave.

The Ina Soltani dress Cheryl wore on Sunday night, is by the Bosnian designer who took her passion for Miami and turned it into a dazzling little cocktail frock melding purple ruffles with a hot pink pencil style skirt. The electric pop of colour was a timely response to the cries of “no more black!”.

At first look I thought it was two pieces, accentuated by a black belt, but on closer inspection it was a canny little optical illusion which was in fact a dress. A pair of co-ordinated Louboutin pumps picked out the sumptuous purple, topped off with some zingy earrings by…you guessed it: de Grisogono. I’m glad to say Cheryl ditched the heavy looking black ankle boots of previous weeks, which I can see give an edge to her style, but ankle straps can create a cut off effect, and foreshorten the legs, so it’s good to see her wearing an open shoe.

However, not everyone in the fashion front row rated her bold look….

“Cheryl looks like she sat on a rotten pineapple on X Factor” tweeted Hilary Alexander, fashion Ed of The Telegraph, during the X Factor on Sunday.

In essence Cheryl looked cute, the line worked, the length worked, and it was refreshing to see some colour, but the main thing for me that didn’t work was just the darker coloured purple and giant ruffles over the lighter pink with its narrower line appeared top heavy on the TV, thus the “pineapple” effect. Sometimes, experiments are a major success, as with her sell out Wolford tights, and other times not, but such is the nature of fashion, and taking risks is all part of making an impact.
